Presses like this one, found in the wineries of La Palma, came to the island with the Spanish and Portuguese settlers between the 15th and 16th centuries, together with the grape varieties that the island's winegrowers still cultivate.
This wine press was built in the first half of the 19th century by a family from the Los Quemados neighbourhood of Fuencaliente who, given the vicissitudes of the time, had to sell it in order to emigrate to Cuba. Later, on their return to La Palma, they bought the press back, paying for it in silver centén coins. From then on the press was handed down from generation to generation until, in July 2007, the Town Council bought it from the family to have it restored by the master carpenter Candelario Méndez and placed in the Plaza de San Antonio as a tribute to the grape harvest.
