Fuencaliente is a charming municipality in the south of the island of La Palma with barely 1,800 inhabitants and a night sky free of light pollution, ideal for enjoying a unique and different activity.
Known for its beautiful landscapes dotted with volcanoes and vineyards, they blend with a sky full of stars. For this reason, since 2020 the Fuencaliente Town Council has proposed and fought to achieve a different and ideal place, with the aim of understanding and promoting the scientific, cultural, natural and landscape values of the municipality, under the slogan “Fuencaliente: sky, sea and land”, putting in place all the mechanisms to meet the technical parameters for excellent visual quality and thus earning its certificate as a “Starlight” municipality from the Foundation of the same name.
The San Antonio Volcano Visitor Center has a dome that houses the TESS (Southern Solar Telescope), connected to a large digital screen on which the Sun can be viewed in comfort. Nearby there is an astronomical viewpoint where, at every solstice, the “solar clock” can be observed and where scientific and educational outreach events are held for all ages. Thanks to the orography of this region, there is a wide network of viewpoints and natural spots at different altitudes, with the chance to enjoy good visibility of the sky all year round. At the Fuencaliente Lighthouse, many photography enthusiasts are amazed by the natural beauty of the night sky, where the constellations and the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye in all their splendour. It is worth mentioning that, in a perfect combination of gastronomy and astronomy, visitors have several restaurants offering exclusive dishes such as “galaxies” or “constellations”. And among the wide range of services Fuencaliente offers for this activity, there is a long list of stellar accommodation in a quiet rural setting, with exclusive equipment that may be useful to interested guests.
Without a doubt, Fuencaliente de La Palma is one of the best places on the planet for observing the night sky.
