El Charco Viewpoint

The Mirador de El Charco viewpoint is on the southern road, the LP-2, past Los Canarios in the direction of Los Llanos de Aridane, at the north-western tip of the municipality. Its panorama takes in part of the Tamanca Protected Landscape and shows, at a glance, how the island changes from the ridge down to the sea: the Canary pine forest of the high ground, the tabaiba scrub of the lower mid-slopes and the coastal strip that forms part of the La Palma Marine Reserve.

Information

The district of El Charco is a steeply sloping hamlet, dominated by the pine forest, which borders El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. The lavas around it are those of the eruption of 1712, which began at the Hacienda del Charco of Doña Ana Teresa Massieu and lasted 56 days, with up to twelve vents open at the same time. Very close by is the chapel of Santa Cecilia, the only one on the island dedicated to the saint.

Access is by car, with parking beside the road, and admission is free. It is also the end of municipal Route 1, Los Canarios – El Charco: from the Casa de Camineros de El Charco, where the line 210 bus stops, it is 700 m along the road to the viewpoint. See also: Barrio El Charco.
